Every teen’s life is filled with pressure…some of it good, some of it bad. The goal of this organization is to help teens stand up to negative pressures or influences. The more aware kids are of the influences around them, the better prepared they will be to face them, including the pressure to use drugs and alcohol. Above the Influence isn’t telling kids how to live their lives; it gives them another perspective and the latest facts.

It seems innocent enough: the party to celebrate the big game, the celebration to end rush week or the bash to ring in the weekend. Yet, the consequences that come with simply hosting a party where alcohol is served to people who are underage can change the party atmosphere into quite a sobering experience.
Many young people ages 21 to 24, especially those on college campuses, do not know that hosting a party and allowing underage friends to possess or consume alcohol can be a risky (and illegal) proposition.
Drug Free Action Alliance has developed a program to help colleges educate their students on the responsibilities of social hosting. TiPS® – Training for Intervention ProcedureS
TiPS® (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) is a dynamic, skills-based training program designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking by enhancing the fundamental “people skills” of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. TiPS® gives individuals the knowledge and confidence they need to recognize potential alcohol-related problems and intervene to prevent alcohol-related tragedies.
• TiPS® for On Premise: The On Premise program, our core offering, is a five-hour program designed for servers at restaurants, bars, hotels, in-store tastings, or other establishments where alcohol is consumed on the premises. Employees learn strategies that ensure responsible alcohol service, promote professionalism, and enhance customer service skills.
• TiPS® for Off Premise: The Off Premise program is a three-hour program addressing the sale of alcohol at grocery stores, liquor stores, convenience stores and package stores. Clerks learn strategies for preventing illegal alcohol sales to underage and/or intoxicated patrons.
• TiPS® for the University: The University program is a two-hour program tailored for students at universities and colleges. This program gives students the skills they need to intervene with their peers in social situations to prevent alcohol-related incidents.
These TiPS® training sessions vary in length from two to five hours. Seven customized versions of the program address concerns specific to the environment.
TiPS® sessions are offered through the classroom with a certified TiPS® Trainer or through eTiPS®, an online training program. Training conducted by a trainer is implemented through video and printed materials to facilitate discussion of the course content. Course material is presented in three sections: Information, Skills Training and Practice/Rehearsal.
Training conducted through eTiPS® is conducted online. eTiPS® Training is self-paced and can be accessed at any time.
As the final step of a TiPS® session, participants complete a multiple-choice exam. Participants who pass the exam receive a certification card, valid for three years in most areas. Exams, grades and other relevant information are maintained online for review.
Prevention Connections offers FREE trainings scheduled throughout the year. Class sizes are limited to 30 participants. Check our calendar for the next training session.
